Making music is one thing, being in a band is another, but every now and then someone comes along and turns all the theories you ever had about music on its head and you say to yourself “Wow, where did that come from?” Mylee Grace is one of those people.

You can credit her multi instrumentalist mum, Maria for giving Mylee her start in music by teaching her how to play guitar from a young age. Mylee then learnt the drums and quickly started writing her own songs. Maria would record her on a Fostex 8 track machine in the living room, all this at the tender age of 10.

Fast forward to 2003 and FBi Radio, a new community radio station was about to launch in Sydney. Someone at Triple J passed onMylee's recording ‘Songs From Cat Hill’ to the new station. The track ‘Thesaurus Rex” was chosen as the test drive song before the station went to air. Mylee Grace was now definitely on the airwaves, literally and on repeat for a month.

After many parties and support gigs with her mum, 2004 would see Mylee take a break from music to focus on her photography.

Big changes would arrive all at once in 2006, Mylee fell in love with child hood friend Ozzie Wright, wrote a batch of new songs and started jamming with her new band. This was followed by the arrival of her son Rocky River Wright in 2008. Her young family then set off to Europe on a tour when Rocky was only 3 months. Something was happening, an exciting adventurous life in music was now starting to take place.

After a 6 month stint in Bali during 2010, Mylee returned to Sydney with a four-track single titled ‘Gidget’. These cd’s were quickly snatched up by 200 eager fans at her homecoming show. Something was starting to take shape here, Mylee actually found herself amongst a healthy following, all of a sudden fans of her music were slowly coming out of the woodwork and they wanted for more.

Her new fans did not know that Mylee had another completed recording under her musical sleeve. In between her adventures she joined her mum Maria Stratton, partner Ozzie Wright, good friend Raymond Lalotoa and Tim Dunn at Hanging Tree Studios in Surry Hills, Sydney over what was an unforced labour of love, it was a family affair. Yes, it took a little bit of time, but over some lengthy listens, editing and a lot of thinking, it was befitting that mid 2011 would be the right time to share this secret piece of the Mylee puzzle with the world.

‘Baby Talk’ is the name of her brand new 7 track EP which was mostly recorded live. It comes filled with songs of love, loss, sisterhood, hope, laughter and dreams. If you like the combination of artists that sway between Feist and Cat Power, then chances are you will love the music of Mylee Grace. Of course being turned on your head is entirely up to you.
